Engineering New Zealand  - Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Mechanical equipment can present a wide range of hazards to people, and often design or engineering controls are the most appropriate tools for managing these hazards. This course provides an introduction to Health and Safety by Design for machinery, and introduces the engineering controls that may be used to manage machinery risks.

Presenters: Hamish Baker & Joe Bain

Cost: Engineering New Zealand members: $790.00 incl. GST

Non-members: $ 900 incl. GST

About the course: This course provides an introduction to the types of hazards typically presented by mechanical systems, methods of assessing the risks posed by the hazards, and methods of managing these risks using design and engineering controls. Current guidance on managing machinery safety risks will be introduced and discussed, including AS/NZS 4024 and the Worksafe Best Practice Guide for Safe Use of Machinery.

Throughout the course, case studies and examples will be presented to show best practice, and to illustrate what not to do.

  • Summary of legal obligations on designers of machinery, under the Health and Safety at Work Act and tort law
  • Principles of health and safety by design, as they apply to machine design
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment for machinery
  • Application of AS/NZS 4024 and the Worksafe BPG for Safe Use of Machinery to manage machinery safety risks
  • Implementation of machinery safety principles and standards on existing machinery

Presenter Information

Joe Bain

Joe Bain (PhD, CPEng) is a Principal Engineer at JSK Consulting Engineers, where he specialises in mechanical engineering design, safety-related engineering work, and seismic design of non-structural building elements. Joe holds a PhD and BE(Hons) in mechanical engineering from Canterbury University, and is a co-founder and former Chair of the NZ Society for Safety Engineering. He has served on the committee of the Maintenance Engineering Society of NZ, and the Leadership Team of the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand.

Hamish Baker

Hamish Baker MEngNZ (BTech (Hons), DipNEBOSH(UK), Certified Functional Safety Professional - is a Director at TEG Risk & Sustainability Services Ltd where he manages a team that specialises in engineering-based risk management and machine safety. He has worked in the UK and New Zealand in the FMCG and Chemical sectors in engineering and generalist safety management roles. With this experience and his OH&S Diploma he brings safety management skills to his engineering practice and the functional safety skills mean he brings detailed technical and engineering skills to the practice of safety management for machines. He is currently the Chair of the NZSSE.
